We tend to pay a lot of attention to paint colors, kitchen designs and even garden trends but when it comes to the furniture in our homes, we sometimes forget that there are some pretty cool new shapes out there to add to our existing décor. From curved silhouettes to recycled materials, these furniture designs new are sure to bring fresh inspiration to any room.

Furniture design has come a long way since the days of heavy, cumbersome wooden pieces. The latest design trends are more focused on comfort and practicality than opulence. They are visually lighter, feature shiny surfaces and incorporate modern materials. This shift in aesthetics is due to the changing mindset of people after World War II who started focusing on function over decorative art.

While we are familiar with some of the major furniture designers like Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll and Mies van der Rohe, a number of lesser-known names have also made their mark on the industry. The innovative use of tubular steel by Moooi in their Sphere sofa was one such breakthrough piece that went on to become iconic. This sculptural seating was designed to form playful configurations and is comprised of three P-shaped units held together with straight rods. This modular piece can be used as a stool or bench seat and makes use of recycled materials that would otherwise have been discarded.

A number of other interesting pieces were showcased at this year’s ICFF, including modular designs that are customizable and multifunctional. This is a trend that has been on the rise over the last few years as consumers demand flexibility in their furnishings. From shelving that can be resized to lighting that can be adjusted, these designs allow the consumer to adapt them to their space and needs.

Another popular trend is the use of natural materials in furniture. This is a move away from the synthetic and man-made materials that were commonplace in previous decades. Designers are exploring the use of bamboo, rattan and other sustainable options to create sleek and stylish pieces that can complement any home.

Curves were another prevalent theme at this year’s ICFF show. Designers like Mool and Mexico City-based Moot are creating comfortable, contemporary couches with rounded silhouettes. Rounds were also featured in other furniture elements like door handles and cabinet pulls such as the new Ophelia series by Rocky Mountain Hardware that was inspired by organic shapes.

A few more trends to watch for include geometric shapes, modular elements and a return to maximalism. Jonathan Adler, for instance, has taken a more tailored approach to sofa lines with his Plural collection of modular seating. He has also incorporated geometric patterns and a mix of materials into his furniture designs that are sure to appeal to a wide range of tastes.
